Gadaladeniya Temple, also known as Gadaladeniya Rajamaha Viharaya, is an ancient Buddhist temple situated in the Pilimathalawa area, about 15 kilometers from Kandy. It is one of the most significant historical and architectural landmarks in Sri Lanka, reflecting a unique blend of South Indian and Sinhalese design.Built in 1344 AD during the reign of King Buwanekabahu IV, Gadaladeniya Temple is renowned for its Dravidian architecture, which was heavily influenced by South Indian styles. The temple was designed by the South Indian architect Ganesvarachari, which is evident in its granite construction and elaborate carvings.

 

The main shrine is dedicated to Lord Buddha and features a large seated Buddha statue. The shrine is adorned with intricate carvings and paintings depicting various scenes from Buddhist mythology.The temple complex includes several stupas, with the main stupa being located on a rock platform. This stupa is surrounded by four smaller shrines, each housing a Buddha statue.The temple`s architectural style is a fine example of South Indian Dravidian architecture, characterized by its detailed stone carvings, pillared halls, and ornamental arches.
